Description of 2 day workshop on Integrative Behavioral Couple Therapy

In this two day workshop I will provide the theoretical background, the assessment strategies, the treatment strategies, and the empirical support for Integrative Behavioral Couple Therapy (IBCT). The workshop will illustrate assessment and treatment techniques through videotaped examples from couples in treatment and provide role play experiences in implementing these techniques.

During the first day of the workshop, I will provide the theoretical background for IBCT, review the assessment of couples with IBCT, describe the case formulation in IBCT, and review the feedback session in IBCT. I will provide a series of role play experiences for the audience, which will be divided into groups of three participants (one participant will role play the therapist, the other two will role play a couple). Role play experiences in the first day will focus on evaluating couples, creating a case formulation, and implementing a feedback session.

During day two of the workshop, I will describe the treatment strategies of IBCT and discuss the empirical support for IBCT. I will illustrate treatment strategies with videotaped examples from couples in treatment. As in the first day, I will provide a series of role play experiences for the audience, which will be divided into groups of three participants (one participant will role play the therapist, the other two will role play a couple). Role play experiences in the second day will focus on interventions for couples.

During both days, role play experiences will focus on common clinical scenarios. We will meet in the larger group to preview the role play exercises and to debrief the role play exercises. We will break into the smaller groups of three to conduct the role play exercises. During both days, I encourage the audience to bring up case examples that they have encountered so we can focus on cases of direct relevance to the audience.

For any participants who took a previous version of this workshop in 2008 or 2009, there is considerable new material, based on my work in training over 100 therapists in the U.S. Veteran’s Administration: e.g., a new and more efficient way of achieving a case formulation and presenting it to the couple in the feedback session and additional video material to illustrate more completely how to intervene with couples and achieve the goals of IBCT.
